Building a Better Home Office

Five upgrades that pay for themselves in a month.

You don't need a whole room to work well from home — you need five things that quietly stop getting in your way. This is the shortlist we'd hand a friend setting up their first proper desk.

Start with the chair

If you sit for more than three hours a day, this is the one place to spend real money. Look for adjustable lumbar support, seat depth adjustment, and armrests that move in more than one direction.

Get your monitor to eye level

The top of the screen should sit roughly level with your eyes. A stack of hardback books works. A proper stand or arm works better.

Add a warm task light

Overhead lighting is the enemy of focus after 4pm. A 2700K–3000K task lamp on one side of the desk changes the whole mood of the room.

Cable-manage once, forever

Adhesive cable channels, a couple of Velcro ties, and one power strip mounted under the desk. Twenty minutes now saves an hour every future rearrangement.

Leave the desk half-empty

The most useful upgrade is negative space. A drawer for the stuff you use daily and a rule that nothing stays on the surface overnight.

Do these five and the rest is polish. Skip them and no amount of gadgets will fix it.
