The Right Lamp for Every Room
Warm vs cool light, lumens and beam angles decoded.

Most rooms are lit badly. Fixing it costs less than a new sofa and changes the room more.
Warm vs. cool light
For homes, stay in the 2700K–3000K range. Cooler than that reads like an office. Warmer than that starts to feel yellow.
Lumens, not watts
Wattage is about power draw, not brightness. A cosy bedside light is around 400 lumens; a working desk lamp wants 800–1000.
Layer three levels of light
Ambient (overhead or floor), task (desk, reading), and accent (a small warm point in a corner). Almost every 'cosy' room does all three.
Watch the beam angle
Narrow beams (20–40°) spotlight a surface. Wide beams (100°+) wash a wall. Task lamps want narrow; ambient lamps want wide.
Dimmable, always
Any lamp you'll use after 8pm should dim. If the fitting doesn't dim, buy a smart bulb that does.
Two well-placed lamps beat one bright ceiling light. Every time.
